Here's how to do a window reseal , using new seals. Click on pictures to make them bigger. Unscrew the window stays where they screw into the window frame. I taped my smaller window out of the way with Duck tape. When i did the larger one i used a brush . Note : it's been pointed out that it's probably not a good idea to use a brush , in case it moves and the window comes crashing down , so either use a better support or remove the window first . Now unscrew the window lock fittings. Remember some fittings may be hidden. Now all the window fittings have been removed and the window held out of the way , the next thing to do is to remove the capping , if your going to reuse it take a note of how it comes out ie screw positions and which bit of the capping was on top of which. Off comes the seal make a note of where the seal is joined ( it's usually at the bottom of the window and in the middle , you can sometimes see a pencil line made when the caravan was built , but if you can't see a line make one ). This is what it looks like with the seal removed ( note the plastic radius pieces at the window corners). Clean the mastic off , first with a plastic scrapper. Then with white spirit on a rag. Note dry the area well after using White spirit , then clean with Meths ( methylated spirit ) , the reason is that any residue of White spirit stops the mastic sticking properly. Now once it's clean mark the position of the fittings , screw holes ( see pencil marks ) , note this picture shows the seal and fitting still in place when the marking was done , but you can mark the screw holes with the seal and fitting removed just look for the screw holes in the wooden frame work. New seals come with mastic already installed in them on one side , note the mastic side is on the outside of the window frame. Measure against the old seal and allow an extra 25mm , cut with either scissors or a stanley knife. Spread the seal and fit to the window frame ( note make sure the seal pushes into the corners well ). Push the seal down on the outside edges ( see my thumb ). Trim the seal once you've fitted it around the window frame. Next , using a staple gun , staple in the channel , around the window seal , but don't staple in the corners. I used a hammer to tap down any staples that were sticking up. Now we're getting there , time to refit the capping ( remember the pencil marks you made to show the fixings screw holes , they'll come in handy now and which way the capping came out when you removed it ). To refit the capping slide one side into the channel and then use a screwdriver or your finger to prize back the other side so the capping sits down into the channel. Hope you find this of some use , when you come to replace your window seals. atb Wizard Copyright © 12/6/2006 All Rights Reserved Back to Top Back to Caravan resealing |
